Candy Bombers and Lots More Dr. Pepper

A recommendation from our Delaware family, we stopped in for an afternoon at the Air Mobility Command Museum just outside of Dover.

"I love my career and what I do everyday. Inspire to learn more and see more everyday."

We were able to sit and try out the controls (thankfully not hooked up to any real life aircraft!) and spin the wheels in actual vintage pilot and co-pilots seats!

Fun note---whatever way one wheel turns, the other does the same! Our tour guide explained this after he caught on that Jeanette was trying to figure out how the wheel was 'moving on it's own' (Jennifer!).

One of the highlights of this trip was the flight simulator that each of us got to try.
We are pleased to report that our instructor 'passed us' and no planes nor passengers were harmed during our adventure.

Real planes that had been flown during the wars were on display.
While the wings looked like they were made of a more substantial material, it was only a cotton cloth that covered them in order to decrease weight.

These baby booties represent the memory of a pilot's wife who had their child while he was away. She sent him a pair of baby booties which he hung inside of the plane every time he flew.

History tells the little known tale of a pilot that children in Germany called "Uncle Wiggly Wings". You might even know him as the Candy Bomber (Rosinenbomber in German).
This interesting man was born in 1920 as Gail Halvorsen and got his unusual nicknames from something he did as he flew back and forth between Berlin and the U.S..
In an effort to boost the morale and spirits of the children in Berlin, as he flew overhead of them he would drop little white parachutes with candies attached to them. He would wiggle the wings of the plane he was in so the children would know which one to follow, thus giving him the name 'Onkel Wackelflugel'.

If you look closely to the right of the King Street sign above, you can see an original cloth parachute he made with a candy bar attached from it (not an original chocolate bar!).

Air Force Two

Vice Presidents and First Lady's from Kennedy to present day have flown in this airplane.

"I get up because everyday is something new."

During our tour we were fortunate to be able to step inside a few of the planes and even sit in the cockpits!

Or as passengers!... Even if it was a cargo plane.

"I get up because it is our God given duty to enjoy the day."

Up at the top of the air traffic control tower we had a birds eye view of the landing strip and hangar!

Sarah inside of the C5!

What looks like benches for sitting are actually for finding your way around and out of the plane once you've filled it with cargo!

A beautiful, pillowy view of the clouds as we stepped outside of the C5.

We always enjoy a relaxing day at the beach every once in a while.

And nothing can beat the beach and an ice cold Dr. Pepper.

We picked a fantastic day to spend out on the glistening sands of Rehoboth beach and enjoy the beauty of the ocean.

"I get up in the morning to enjoy the beauty of sunlight and hear the birds chirping. Life is wonderful to share with my adoring husband, children, and grandchildren!"

"Because it's far better to wake up alive than to wake up dead!"

"I get up in the morning to enjoy the beauty of our Earth---the beautiful trees, flowers in the spring---love the change of seasons---love the snow (when I don't have to go out in it!). Life is short, we should all treasure the beauty that life holds---family and love for each other! Live, love, be happy."

"I get up because Ruthie made me breakfast and I need to eat it while it's still warm. Sometimes I wake up before she does, and I watch her wake up with a smile. Never sure if she's happy cause she married me 44 years ago, or if she was dreaming about another man."

Thank you to our marvelous Delaware Family! It was a blessing to get to know you over food, stories, musicals, and karaoke! Thank you for everything you've done...and for the Dr. Pepper for the road!

Everyday is another wonderful day to
learn something new,
sing karaoke,
and yes, have a cold can of Dr. Pepper.
Here's to making the most of it!

Love,
The Crew
