We “kick”-started our morning at The Awakening, an enormous sculpture of a giant emerging from the ground in Chesterfield, Missouri, before we headed to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis!
Before we left for the trip we decided that it’d probably be a wise idea to invest our pennies in a nice camera. We found one that we absolutely love! And while we think we’ve improved our picture taking skills quite a bit since we left that first day for Michigan, we are constantly discovering new settings and buttons!
One of the features we really adore is the Self Timer. When the lovely guy at the Best Buy sold us the camera, he raved on and on about this neat “Selfie Feature”. We just thought, “Well, alright, that’s nice… so can the camera take pictures“?
We never could have imagined how much of a life saver that “Selfie Feature” has been for our group pictures. The places we go, there’s not always someone who can take our picture, and we love not having to decide which of us to leave out…even if it does mean taking a plethora of “selfies“.
When we were trying to take a photo of ourselves here at the arch, a school group walked by and a random boy stopped at pointed at as yelling “SELFIE!!!”. Yes, yes we do take “selfies”, but I think it’s for a pretty good reason.
Here we are inside of the ‘pod’ that’s ready to take us up through the legs of the arch and to the top of this 63 story tall concrete and steel memorial to Thomas Jefferson!
At the top of the Gateway Arch you can peek through the little windows and see the Illinois side of the Mississippi River to the East and the Missouri side to the West!
When the arch was constructed, it was two separate pieces that were joined together at the top in the viewing panel. In the picture above, Sarah and Jennifer are standing directly in the middle. With one foot on each side of the monument‘s two legs, they give the effect of ‘splitting the arch’!
"Because life is too great to waste sleeping."
"Morning is the best time of the day."
"I wake up in the morning to make a living which includes family and friends at times. :)"
"I wake up to get to work so I can afford another vacation."
Thank you to the amazing park rangers and the staff at the Gateway Arch for your generosity and for keeping the Arch safe! :)
We explored the streets of St. Louis, stopping at the Old Cathedral next to the Arch…
…and wandering around the beautifully intricate Old Courthouse!
Many people are well familiar with the Gateway Arch, but there is another, little known arch in Missouri that can be found right in the entrance way at the Union Station Hotel.
Stand close to the archway with your face towards the wall and another person doing the same at the other end of the arch. If one person whispers something, the other person can hear them so vividly it’s as if they were standing right behind them!
The Whispering Arch is moderately famous for it’s mystical acoustic properties.
"Because I love my work and talking to people."
While the window to watch them bottle sodas was closed for maintenance, we still had a delicious lunch…and tried Missouri famous Toasted Ravioli at Fitz‘s!
"To serve the Lord and love my fellow men."
Located on the loop of Delmar, when we heard the words “Planet Walk”, we thought that this just may be the closest we will ever get to space and seeing the planets up close in a to-scale replica…
…but our dreams were heavily crushed by the 568.3E24 kg’s of Saturn’s weight that was all summed up in a sign that was but a little taller than Jeanette.
While we didn’t see all of the models of the planets that we expected, we did get to see the moon far away in the middle of the day! A moon on top of a hotel that is!
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis is a thing of wonder, amazement, and reverence. It’s grandeur architectural beauty is even furthered by it’s brilliant colors once you step inside.
It has been said that standing next to the Cathedral Basilica is almost as if you had been transported to Europe and were exploring one of their finest historic cathedrals. Many of the European cathedrals however are adorned in a Gothic style, while this cathedral’s architecture leans more towards a Romanesque or Byzantine style.
A first look into the inside may lead one to believe that the ceilings and walls are covered in majestic paintings, but there are none of it is painted. Composed of over 41 million pieces of mosaic tile, it is one of the largest installations of mosaic in the Western Hemisphere, proving to be a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of St. Louis.
Thanks to the helpful advice from the man we met at Union Station earlier in the day, we were back again that night to see their spectacular light show!
"Because God allows me to."
"The Lord allow me to wake up every morning."
"To go to school and get an education to get a job!"
"I get up every morning for my kinds...all four."
To an adventurous day and kind people,
Love,
The Crew
